When loving hurts

It was 3:30pm. I sipped my coffee, watching the  doors intently. I eventually saw her walking in, that is my old best friend, and I was hit with what felt like 100 different emotions at once. She ordered her coffee before sitting down at my table. “It’s been a while” she said, and I was grateful she was the one to start the conversation.  I gave her a big smile and we started talking, mostly small talk, avoiding what we had met to talk about in a way I think only we were capable of doing.  To the observer we probably looked like best friends who hadn’t seen eachother in a while. We knew better, we were more like “friendly” enemies then friends. The last time we had talked (aside from arranging this meeting) I had told her happy birthday and she had called me a bitch. Ouch. Eventually we moved onto the more serious issues that we had met to discuss, including why our friendship ended the way it did and why she thought it was okay to treat me as horribly as she did the last 8 months of our friendship (boy that was interesting). And how it would work if we ever did a summer musical again together. But it went surprisingly well and we worked through it in a way that I think made us both feel a bit better. It ended on a good note, we hugged goodbye (woah) and we were getting into our cars (somehow they were parked next to eachother, despite arriving at different times) but she called to me before I closed my door. “Em, I have one last question.” I waited for her to continue.   "Why did you treat me so nicely when I treated you so horribly?” I looked at her and thought for a moment and my response went something like this. “I don’t know really. Because I loved you I guess. Though don’t get me wrong, sometimes it took all I had to be nice. But I loved you. What else was I supposed to do? And partly because I had no idea how to stand up for myself, or to you.”  She looked at me. “I knew you were going to say something like that.” “Well. You were my best friend for 3 years. What do you expect?“  She smiled and got in her car. (It was nice to know that although we’ll probably never be friends again,  and we probably won’t talk ever,  at least we aren’t enemies any more). I got in mine. But as I was driving it got me thinking about our past friendship, my friendships now, my life in general.  And her question ended up being one of those questions that pushed me into a revolving door that I couldn’t escape.

“Why did I let her treat me that way?” “Why didn’t I stand up for myself?” “Was it because I was too weak?” “Did I bring all that hurt on myself?” I started asking these questions and more over and over again.
After quite a while I came to several conclusions.

1) Sometimes it takes a whole lot of strength to be kind to someone who isn't kind to you. But it is often necessary, and is always the right thing to do.

I found this picture earlier today. And it is so true. Even in relationships I have today. Sometimes I get exhausted trying to keep the relationship going, or keep having hope for things to get better and work out. Sometimes it takes all of me to be kind and sweet when I feel like I'm constantly being pushed away. It is often a lot harder for me to be kind then it would be for me to just snap and throw up my hands and give up. But thats just it, I don't ever give up. This lead me to my second conclusion.

2) I won't give up on relationships (I wrote a blog on this a while back) even if being in those relationships ends up just hurting me (often this is not the case, but there are those occasional friendships or whatever that I just end up being hurt by). Even when I'm so hurt I just bounce back from it and have another go at it. I'll give you and example. I have a friend that has hurt me quite a bit, but every time I think about giving up, I send a message or do something for that person, to remind myself to keep going. Sometimes all it takes is saying something nice. This is because whenever my back is against a wall, afraid to keep going or afraid of being hurt, there is this person who appears in me. She has a tendency to show up whenever I'm hurt and I'm tempted to stop trying. She's part determination, part love, and part too stupid to know any better. She has a tendency to go, "oh, you think you've given it your all and that you can't do anymore? well, watch this!" And off she and I go, diving in head first, putting our all back into whatever it is I was tempted to run from. And for the most part, I love it and its a good thing. It helps me keep going. But sometimes I just want to kick her and tell her to go away. Which leads me to my 3rd conclusion.

3) Living this way isn't easy. When you put yourself into relationships like this, where you open yourself up to someone, in an effort to show them, "Look, I trust and love you, I'm being open with you, and kind to you, because I want to be friends with you and you should be open with and kind to me too", sometimes you face the terror of falling down and having no one to catch you. But if some of us don't live like this, how would things ever change? We should do what is right and be kind, even if it's difficult. (I've been watching Little House, talk about reliving your childhood, and there's an episode where Laura and Mary have to deal with snippy Nellie Olsen, and whenever Laura complains to Ma, Ma just replies, "do unto others". great reminder)

Which got me to thinking that if I want something to change that just isn't changing, I have to step up and be the one to change it. I never really liked the quote "be the change you want to see in the world" but I'm realizing more and more how true it is, however cheesy it may be. But then I got to thinking why I am the way I am. What about me makes me keep loving people who hurt me or want nothing to do with me?

Enter good old Grandma J. I've gotten to spend sometime with her this week, and we've had some really great talks about life, God, people, whatever. So when I was with her yesterday, I just asked her. "Grandma, why do you think we keep loving people when they hurt us?" She looked at me and asked me to explain a little. So I did. And we ended up having an hour conversation about it. And one of the things she said went something like this, "well, probably because that's what you've been taught. From your parents, from your grandparents, from your church family. Loving others was instilled in you when you were a child and is something that you've seen lived out right in front of you. Loving others is what Jesus has taught you." She went on to give examples, such as when we had a girl live with us who my family loved on constantly, even when she was nasty to us and more. "You've seen it your whole life, what makes you think you would act any differently now that you're older?" Makes sense I guess.

She also told me that God had just given me a heart for people. And that makes me love them.

She also said that being a Christian meant living the way I live, and that many people live exactly like that, without realizing it it.

So we came to my last conclusion together.

Jesus lived a perfect life. He loved those who hated him. He prayed for those who spit on Him. He died to save those who would reject him. He died to save me. He is the ultimate example, and we should follow his lead, and love those who are sometimes hard to love.

So stick it out. Hang onto struggling relationships. Why? Because they could very well turn out to be some of the best relationships you have. And those relationships are so worth all the hurt. Believe me.

Photography challenge- Day 1!

Day One: Smile

I looked around for a while through my photos of children, and ran across this one. This is little Tynleigh, my next door neighbor girl who I have recently had a chance to bond with. She is one of the cutest little things ever. She smiles 99% of the time and just laughs and cuddles all the time. She is so much fun. Even though she'll never ever replace my Millie May, it is nice to have a little girl to play with basically whenever I want again. Her smile just makes me smile.

Freshmen Year/ Adjusting to life back home

Well. I did it. I'm officially a sophomore in college (holy crap).
Freshmen year was absolutely amazing and so far exceeded all my hopes and expectations. I made some amazingly amazing friends who I miss terribly already and am already excited about seeing again.

My roommates are basically amazing and I love them to death. Although we had our ups and downs over the past few months I love them dearly and would do anything for them. Laura kept me going on the days I didn't want to keep going. She constantly made me laugh and I knew if I ever needed her she would be there for me. She was the one I found during outcry when I was a crying mess and she was the one crying on the floor laughing with me while looking up Helen Keller jokes (which our other roommates...didnt appreciate like we did). Becca also was an encouragement to me and I think I had more talks about God with her then anyone else. She makes me laugh and she has a great heart for the Lord. And of course we have KP, who wasn't technically my roommate, but basically lived in our room (enough so that my RA counted her in    all our floor events, dinners, and even on our finals board). She's small and funny and she can make me laugh harder then most people. I'm excited to actually have her as a roommate my sophomore year.

Kaity and Cassandra were my first real friends at Trinity. Cassandra and I were buddies literally from day one when we met in FYF. I knew right away that I would be friends with her, and it turns out she is one of my dearest friends. Kaity and I also hit it off almost immediately and I seriously cannot picture Trinity without her. She was the one I would run to whenever I needed a laugh and her sweetness amazes me. I don't know what I would have done without her. So many of my favorite college memories happened with her around and I'm sure many many more will be made in the future.

Rachel, Brittany, and Abby also played a huge role in making freshmen year as amazing as it was. These 3 girls had a knack for always taking me by surprise, and I think I spent as much time with them as I did my own roommates towards the end of the year. Abby and I suffered through English Lit together which obviously made us friends. Brittany was always there to give hugs and smiles, and back scratches :). I love these girls. I'll probably be sleeping in their room alot sophomore year ;)

Lori and Caroline...I think it's fair to say I spent more time in Lori's room then I did anyone else's, except maybe Kaity. It's funny to think that when I first met her during first semester I was beyond scared of her, and saying a few words in front of her I considered an accomplishment. She ended up being one of my closest friends and I love her dearly. I think we are a lot a like in some ways and we both share a passion for children and both plan on being teachers. She also helped me conquer my hear of heights as I spent many hours on her bunk bed. I miss this girl like
crazy already and have a hard time thinking about the fact that she is a year older then me and won't be around my senior year. And Caroline brought a piece of home to Trinity and having her around made Trinity feel more like home, especially during first semester. And I know that if I ever needed her, she would have been there.

I loved my first year at Trinity. There are very very few things I would have changed about it. I miss everyone already and am excited to go back. But for now I am enjoying a break from classes and the stress that comes with them.

However adjusting to life back home hasn't exactly been easy, though it's gone pretty okay. I love my family. They're awesome. My youngest brother, Max, and I get along so well it's insane. I'm probably closest with him out of all my family and being back with him is wonderful. My dad and I, though we don't agree on everything, get along super well and respect each other and have a great relationship. My mom and I on the other hand have always struggled and it's looking like this summer isn't going to get much better. I can never seem to shake the feeling that she is trying to control me, and she has a way of saying things and twisting them that drives me crazy sometimes. But I love her, and I plan on trying to make our relationship better over this summer (some times I am more positive about this plan then other times) But we've already had fun as a family playing games and hanging out. Max and I have played Just Dance 3 for hours this week and have had a blast.

Probably the hardest change from living at college to coming back and living at home is the rules. At school, Woody and I follow our own schedules, make our own decisions, and are very much living on our own. But coming back it was quite clear that my parents are very much trying to control us with their rules, and it hasn't seemed to change much from last year. For the most part, I don't care. I don't  stay out super late unless I'm spending the night somewhere. Woody has a harder time then I do with that because he feels like my parents very much are overstepping their boundaries. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out once his girlfriend comes home. I have a feeling we'll end up talking with my parents about the situation sometime in the near future.

Being back with my friends though is quite possibly the best part of being home so far. Sunday night I got to spend time with our youth group, and Annie, Nikki and Rachel.  It was a blast. I didn't realize how much I missed them until we were running around the yard chasing each other, and then running away from my brother pretending to be a possessed bunny. It was so much fun and I love those girls sooo much! I was officially excited for summer after Sunday night. Nikki and I have already hung out and Emily gets back tonight so I get to see her. Summer is going to be great.

Don't Give Up

I'm sick again.
No beating around the bush. That's just how it is.
And this is not what I need right before finals week. It's just not.
My nightmares have come back with a vengeance. "Lately I've been having nightmares where I'm cut into so many pieces there's not enough of me to put back together."
I need sleep. Nightmares are not what I need right before finals week when I need to be getting sleep.
I'm more homesick right now then I've ever been.
Also not what I need right before finals week.

But still, even though I'm saying "God, this is not what I need right now." He keeps saying, "yes it is."
Why? I have no idea. Why now? God's timing is not our own.

So here's my encouragement to you right now.
Maybe you're not getting enough sleep.
Maybe you're homesick.
Maybe you have to get a good grade on that test.
Maybe you have friends who are hurting.
Maybe you feel like you don't have room to breathe.
Maybe you feel like God isnt there.
Maybe you feel like you're never going to make it through this next week.

You are. I am. And God won't ever give us more then we can take.
So don't you give up. Keep working. Keep striving. Keep up the fight. We're almost there.

Earlier last week I had a bit of a breakdown. More then a bit actually. I was tired. I was angry. I was confused. I pulled my roommate outside with me and as we talked she looked at me and said very firmly, "you know things are going to get better? you know that right?" I just shook my head at her.

I had it wrong. Because the truth is it is going to get better. It may get harder first and it may be a difficult week. But we keep pressing on. If there's something I've learned about life its this: it goes on. Just because I'm struggling to have a positive attitude today doesn't mean it couldn't turn out to be a great night. I just have to keep going. Keep moving. Only 6 more days till I never have to worry about math again. I can do it.

And so can you.
